Togetherness: resist evil, stand firm in faith

“Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings” 1 Peter 5:9

The various happenings in the world today should not surprise us, we have been warned explicitly in the word. Racist murders, terrorist attacks, landmark ruling on gay marriage in the US, human trafficking and more woes. Because we know the word, the full gospel of Jesus Christ crucified, we are not afraid, but rather, we hold steadfast to our faith in Christ. In times such as this, we should examine our belief system, stand in front of the mirror and ask, “How distinctive is my lifestyle, beliefs and attitude from the world?” We are in the world but we are not of the world, the difference must be clear.

In this FootLamp edition, I am calling all believers to the place of unity, oneness and love. Togetherness. We need each other to survive.

Jesus needed His father to stay on course; he did not hide this fact from us. In John 17, Jesus prayed for himself, his disciples and for all believers (present and future). The chapter is deep in revelation; it is a true summation of the life & purpose of Jesus, and written by him. Jesus said, “I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours” John 17:9b

The Lord’s desire is that we stay together; this is so important that Jesus added it to his prayer point.

“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their messages, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you sent me” John 17:20-21

Satan has many schemes but the one he his most known for, even in Heaven, is division. He used it in the Garden of Eden, in Heaven amongst the angelic beings and he still uses it today. The schemes of Satan are exposed to those who walk in the light. The word of God is the lamp unto our feet and light unto our path. When we remain in the word we cannot stumble.

In the body of Christ, our unity and togetherness will always be under attack, but we must resist the devil and stand firm in faith. Today’s practice of “Lazy Christianity” exposes believers to the lies of the enemy. We no longer respect and love the place of worship and fellowship; self-righteousness has made us more reliant on self. We gravitate to prophecies and quick fixes rather than desiring to hear from God direct. We prefer to pursue the law as the way of righteousness (religious practices, doctrines of men that hold children of God bound, teachings that focus on what is seen). The Bible describes it in Romans 9:32 as pursuing righteousness not by faith but as if it were by works. These ungodly mind-sets have found there way into the church, bearing fruits of discord, covetousness, condemnation and judgement. These fruit bearers have temporarily forgotten Ephesians 2:8-9 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast”.

It is time to value our unity and oneness as children of God, most especially as the frequency of the end time darts increases. We need each other; more frequent gatherings of the saints, to eat, drink, dine and share all things together as citizens of the Kingdom. Togetherness.

So today, what is your contribution to the family of believers? Start by refusing to speak negative words over any child of God, let God be the judge. Be an advocate for the expansion of Gods Kingdom – invite your neighbours to church, make sure you and your entire family keep the Sabbath Day Holy – it’s a command. Pray for oneness and unity in the body of Christ and remember the prosecuted church. Together we stand.

Shalom.

Prayer:
Father, sometimes it feels I am walking down corridors of life in darkness, but your word says even in darkness you are my light. Thank you for your word that is the lamp for my feet and the light that brightens up my path. Lord, I want your eyes, let me see every believer with your eyes, we are oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord, a royal priesthood and a Holy nation. Help us to remain one in love and faith. Amen.
